Did you know the perfect coat is a dad coat? For real. It’s trendy and in style all the time.
Not going to lie, it took me a while to get in on this trend because peacoats have always been my go-to. And, a peacoat will never go out of style but sometimes, your thighs get cold and you need the coverage. No joke, I have realized that many of my coats are peacoats and they don’t stand a chance against the Ohio weather and windy days.
Just think of how much I would suffer in Chicago! Not cool.
Anyways, I’m hip to these wool-blend dad coats and I must say it’s one of the best investments.
With winter rearing it’s ugly head and doing things like being cold one day and somewhat warmer the next day, you want to be prepared. I would say that most of the ladies that I’m around have a go-to look that features jeans, booties/boots, and a sweater. You can’t go wrong with this look and when you add the dad coat, you just pull off the perfect business casual look.
Full disclosure, I work at Abercrombie & Fitch so I see (and own) a lot of coats. And, the dad coat is a hot item. Like, it sells out very quickly especially when we have a 15% off sale.
Meet my winter uniform.
The Dad Coat
If I’m being honest, the dad coat is the coat that works for any event. I’m talking about weddings, work, or runs to the grocery store, etc. You can wear this coat whenever and it’ll look good and you look polished at all times. What I love is that the coat is affordable — I’m very big on not spending $200+ on a coat even though quality > quantity. This specific dad coat is black and grey plaid which I love because I don’t have a coat like it. The cut works for me and it’s long so I can easily wear jeans or a skirt/dress with it.
I would say tan and camel are a favorite of many people when it comes to dad coats (google Zendaya’s Feb 2020 date and you’ll see her in one). I wasn’t lucky enough to get a tan one before it sold out but that’s okay because I’m sold on my coat. Overall, this coat is a classic and wearable style.
Black Booties
Yes, this post is all about my coat but I wanted to show off what I paired with it. Black booties have been a part of almost all of my winter looks. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if I have to invest in another pair because I wear them so much. Black booties are the perfect shoe to dress up or dress down a look. I was able to get mine for a great price on UrbanOG which is one of my favorite places to find shoes.
Raise your hand if booties are a staple in your wardrobe. You can’t go wrong with them.
Mom Jeans
Yes, I am a mom jean fanatic. Like I stated above, I work at Abercrombie & Fitch so I have endless choices of jeans and always stay loyal to my mom jeans. I’m not sure if it’s because they’re high-rise and cover the mom pouch or if it’s because they don’t squeeze my thighs to death. Either way, I love them and you will more than likely catch me in them on most days. And, a good mom jean with stretch fabric is what you want to look into. Many people speak out against mom jeans because they can be rigid and leave a lot of bunching in the front — look for stretch fabric and thank me later.
Chunky Sweaters
Can you imagine winter attire without chunky sweaters? It just isn’t happening. I need a sweater to get through the day. Not only are they warm but they keep you chic and cute without having to try too hard. Look, you can pull off an entire look with a sweater and leggings — that’s it. As you can see, I love my sweaters and I can’t tell you the last time that I didn’t wear one. My sweater spot is American Eagle and Abercrombie. I find my blasts of colors at AE and my neutrals at A&F.
Listen, the looks that you can create while wearing this coat are endless. You can recreate a look and add this coat to make it something new. From layering to simple pieces, you can do it all with this coat. And, I say this from experience along with my research on how to wear this coat.
Other Pieces to Style with this Coat:
- Satin midi skirt
- Leather mini skirt
- Leather pants — any color!
- Satin or slip midi dress
- Any jeans — try out some flare jeans!
This coat is your staple coat going for all seasons (besides summer!). You can’t go wrong with trendy and warm.
I highly recommend investing in a dad coat or one that is similar regarding length and cut. You won’t regret having this coat in your life.
Any pictures with the coat closed? I doubt you’re wearing the coat open in Chicago.
Unfortunately, I don’t. I’ll try to get one!
The one thing I was looking for was – it it true to size? I got an xs in long and was wondering if I should have gotten an xxs instead.
Yes! I think it’s true to size — I sized down thinking it would be big and I should have went with my actual size. It fits but when I wear sweaters, it gets a little tight if they’re bulky sweaters.
