A must-have for my closet is a black pair of jeans, a really good pair. I feel that you can wear black jeans at all times. There is no season where black jeans aren’t in. Black jeans are a transitional piece. You can wear them to work with flats or mules then dress up your look with a pair of heels or dress it down with some vans. All in all, you can make black jeans work whenever you want and that’s why they are a staple piece (and should be a staple in everyone’s closet!).
Now, you might be wondering how you can transition these jeans through your day. Don’t worry, I have a few tips that I picked up working in retail and planning how people should style the ‘trend edit’ black jeans of the season. First, you need a good pair of black jeans. I’m talking quality because quality will always outweigh quantity. But, don’t go splurging on those $300+ jeans and use this post as an excuse because Brittnee did not say do that.

My favorite black jeans are from Abercrombie. I’m a big fan of their Ultra High Rise Skinny Jeans — add in the Curve Love for this booty. Throw in the Curve Love High Rise Mom Jeans, I have those in black, too. Also, don’t sleep on American Eagle’s Black Jeggings. If there’s one thing that you can’t have too many of, it’s jeans. From different styles to different fits, I like to keep a variety on hand especially when they last longer than one year.
Focus on the style of your black jeans
As I mentioned above, you want to consider the style of the jeans that you’re wearing. Black jeans can be right for every occasion. You want to make sure that they’re appropriate if you’re wearing them to an event or to the office. Now I’m in a very casual setting where I can get away with some rips and holes, but make sure to avoid those if you’re in more of a business casual world. For your work environment consider black jeans that have no frayed hems and holes, but don’t shy away from a skinny fit or mom jean if they look good with your mules or flats. My every occasion jeans are skinny jeans because a shoe can either dress it up or down.
Incorporate the basics
If you want to flip a switch on a look, it’s about the basic top and dressing it up. I’m obsessed with bodysuits so I will tell you right now, a bodysuit can change a whole look. Wear a basic top and pack that cute jacket that will spice it up. Trust me on this, either go basics or go home. But for real, consider a basic top that isn’t glitzy and glam because you want to wear something up top that will get you through work with your black jeans. Go neutrals and play off of that with a bomber jacket or leather coat. Black jeans tend to look good with everything.
Pick your shoes (and pack a spare!)
Listen, shoes can make or break an outfit. It’s easy to transition when you pick the right pair of shoes. Happy Hour after work? Wear the cute black booties in your closet or stand out with some animal print booties. Both pairs will work in well with your business look or casual run to the grocery store. Need to throw on a pair of strappy heels? Wear the mom jeans and toss your favorite pair of sneakers on the floor of the passenger side to switch into. Make it easier on yourself by packing the extra pair of shoes to go with your outfit rather than change into an entire new outfit.
Dress up the look with a blazer
Need to go to work or a business casual look? A blazer is your answer. I feel that you can dress up the most casual look (jeans and a t-shirt) with a blazer and call it a day. We’re living in the time of blazers for every moment — plaid, bright colors, bold colors, textured blazers, suede and leather blazers. You name it, there’s a blazer for it. Find a bold and bright blazer and dress up those black jeans. Transition it to fab from chill easily.
Add a jacket to the mix
Hi, jacket advocate here. I’m all about throwing on a jacket that can dress up or dress down your look. You can see my favorite shearling jacket above, I throw it on all the time for a date night look. Basically, it’s a now-you-see it look. I’m casual with the bodysuit and black skinny jeans, but I’m date-night ready when I toss on a jacket. Keep it in the car if you know you have a date after work or after your errands run. Always be prepared to make the black jeans look good. Or throw on a denim jacket (yes, a blue one for contrast) and you’re ready for date-night at Top Golf. The jeans are the magic here.
From work to date night to a trip to the grocery store, you can style your black jeans any type of way.
An ode to my favorite black jeans — you’ll notice that many are from Abercrombie & Fitch which is my go-to jean brand. Throw in American Eagle and Old Navy, as well. I have to keep budget-friendly brands around because ya girl isn’t splurging $89+ on jeans all the time.
