Out of all the rooms in my home, the family room is the room that gets utilized the most. It’s right off from the laundry room, right by the guest bathroom, and boasts a giant sectional couch which you can probably picture why it’s utilized the most. Even though we use it the most, it has not received that much love. The family room is perhaps the only room that isn’t done or been decorated outside of holiday decor.

If you know me, you know that I love interior design. That’s what I’ve always wanted to do so I get excited when I get to do it. I’m talking saving different styles I like, looking up affordable furniture and home decor, and styling the room in different ways. Yes, I’m about this life. I’m thrilled to share that my family room is now family friendly and up to my standards.
Plus, I did this on a budget. One goal of mine was to not go money crazy in one room, and I succeeded.

Here are my tips for a budget-friendly room makeover:

Research for the best price

This is the best advice I can give when it comes to shopping around for decor. You need to research different places and pieces to see where you’ll get the best deal. One place might have it for $17.99 and another $12.99; you don’t want to miss out on a deal like that. I’ve been able to stock up on different decor by price matching and store hopping. A good deal is a good thing; it is not cheap or unreasonable to look around. My throw pillows were $3, and I was so excited because throw pillows go for like $15 these days. Never give in until you have looked around. You’ll see that when you go on your hunt, you’ll end up finding something good. I find it works best if you want to stick to your budget.

Take pieces from other rooms

Always mix things up when you get the chance. If that means taking from another room because it goes with the vibe, then do it. I’m a fan of this method as I buy decor all the time and just put it somewhere before realizing it needs a new place. Not only is this nice on your wallet, but your making use of something that you might have tossed in a year or two. I added my letterboard and home assistant from another room because I realized this room is where they fit in and where I spend most of my time. There’s just something about moving things around and switching out the vibe. And, it stays affordable for you as you don’t buy something new and can keep the budget down.

Secure a timeless piece

Statement pieces. Timeless pieces. There will always be some decor that is your favorite and makes the room. With a timeless piece, you can count on it leaving its mark and being something people notice. It can be anything from a gold pineapple, glass case, collectible books, etc. For my room, I went for gold pieces that would stand out in a black and white color scheme. You’ll see that I went for the gold pineapple and gold lantern. I find that you don’t have to splurge on these and if you do, you don’t need to break the bank — just invest in one piece to liven up your room.

Utilize effortless scents

I love a pleasant scent, and I want that to be the first thing my guests notice when they come into a room. It’s essential that there is a pleasant smell to welcome people. Buy a plant

The one thing that I haven’t done but will be doing is buying a plant. I want a dog like everyone else, and I plan to put it either in the corner of the family room or by the tv. A plant will liven things up in a room especially a place like my family room where it’s pretty monochromatic. So yes, a plant is needed because it’ll pop and stand out in the room. And, I can admit that I know plants don’t come cheap so jumping back to the first point – research. A fake plant might be more your thing, and I don’t judge. Secretly, I want a fake plant, too so that I know it’ll stay alive. But yes, a plant can help refresh a room as a single or few additions if you want to go plant crazy.

Deep Clean the Room

Sometimes all a room needs is a deep clean. Purge the room and get rid of things you don’t need. It’s an easy way to stick to your budget because you’ll be decluttering and throwing things out, which can also change a room. Most of the time you have all the supplies you need for a deep clean like a vacuum, trash bags, and a sponge. It’s an easy and simple way to clean up your space.

This makeover is all about creating a space that welcomes everyone and where we can entertain our guests. I genuinely feel I can have guests over and entertain in this room without cringing. It also helps that it smells so inviting and clean! There are no worries about a dog smell or my home not living up to my expectations with the Renuzit® Snuggle® oils.
