With Fall right around the corner, it only makes sense to dive back into the blog with mystery and crime show recommendations. Am I right or am I right? I love getting people’s perspectives on shows because I’m a binge watcher. And, I hate wasting some views on a show that isn’t all that. So please, always share your opinions and views on a show because I am tuning in.
This is my fall edition of shows that I’m currently watching and it’s mystery & crime categorized because it’s spooky season. Or in the words of my son, it’s “spooky wooky”. I want to set the tone that these are not thrillers or anything scary. It’s too early in the season for me for scary thrillers — that only happens maybe once.
We’re going to jump into some of my favorites that either just kicked off or have been out for years. Plus, there are tons of seasons to the ones that I am rewatching.
Let’s dive into these shows and your possible new favorites.
Cold Case — Crime/Mystery
In my opinion, Cold Case should have never ended. It deserves the run that Criminal Minds and NCIS had/have. Cold Case centers around the detectives solving cold cases. All of the cases were unique and keep you thinking. I say this from experience as I am re-watching it and trying to solve the cases. Cold Case is led by a female detective which is probably why I wanted to be a detective when I was twelve.
I don’t want to give anything away as there is the personal drama that the show shares outside of the cases and it gives the characters a life outside of work. I appreciate shows like that which is why I’ll always rewatch Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder. Cold Case should not have been canceled and this is basically why it’s at the top of my list. It’s top tier.
Bones — Crime/Mystery
Adding to my crime and mystery show list, Bones is on the top of my list. What I love about Bones is that the characters have personalities and you get a glimpse of their lives. You’re getting to solve a mystery without dealing with crazy serial killers all the time like some shows. It’s a crime show that does showcase cases that deal with homicides, but the murders aren’t filmed and you see them solve the cases. Basically, falls into the same category as to why I like Cold Case.
Bones is another show that centers around a woman lead which I love. I know that’s the thing these days, but seeing a woman in a top position either lead or help lead just makes me want to watch more. As a teenager, it inspired me because I’m a bottom-tier millennial so we were starting to see women-led everything. Back to the show, Bones is giving you the crime after it happens and you watch as they unfold and solve the case based on bones. There are no clues besides the body which makes it interesting.
Only Murders in the Building — Mystery
Now, this is a new show on Hulu with Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, and it’s giving me Clue vibes. To sum it up, there’s a murder in the building and the tenants get together to solve it. It comes out on a weekly basis so I can’t even tell you if the ending is worth it. But, I really like it so far. I feel like there is humor and suspense, you’re always being thrown a cliffhanger at the end of the episode. It keeps you wanting to know what happens next.
So, there aren’t too many details but it’s good. I feel like some people will like it and others won’t. I will say that it has already been renewed for another season and that’s always a good sign.
Dirty John — Crime
Dirty John is a show that I didn’t think I would like, but I did. More so, the story on Betty Broderick. There is just something about a true crime story that is played out rather than a documentary. The one negative is that this story is based on a true-story, and there were people harmed in this story like the families. With this show, you aren’t getting the mystery of trying to figure things out. It centers on Betty Broderick and her downfall that led to the murder of her ex-husband and his new wife.
This is a wild tale and I didn’t know it was a true story until googling it. Definitely a good show to check-in on if you need something to watch!
My Mystery List to Watch:
- Who Killed Sara?
- The Haunting of Bly Manor
- You, Season 3
- Cruel Summer (need to re-watch before Season 2 next year!)
Obviously, I am counting down the days until You return because that is a classic. Thank you Netflix for taking this LifeTime show and not letting it die off. You is definitely number five on this list if I had gone for that number. It’s the thriller/crime show that doesn’t make me afraid.
Now, the other shows on my list will be a maybe. One thing about me is that I’m not going to scare myself to the point of needing a night light. So, give me your reviews if you’ve seen these flicks! I need to know what I’m getting into.
My crime and mystery shows have a limit. More so, for my paranoia and anxiety. While I’ve watched all the seasons of Criminal Minds, it probably won’t be a show that I watch over and over again. For my sanity, I don’t need to tune into too many shows that chase serial killers. It just wouldn’t keep my me feeling safe. Obviously, that might sound wild but I’m a paranoid gal *insert shrug*.
What mystery and crime shows are on your list? What should we be watching with you?
